We had a lovely visit to our Vineyard studio by Scotland's most stylish cake & cookie designer Liggy Morgan. Her gorgeous cake shop is based in Edinburgh's trendy William St and from that base a team of four dedicated bakers and cake decorators work away producing the most adorable and delicious cakes, cupcakes and cookies.

I particular love her Rainbow Rose Birthday Cake and Secret Garden Birthday Cake which comes in Vanilla, Lemon, Chocolate, White Chocolate, Red Velvet and Coffee Flavour flavour. It's a pity my Birthday is in December!

la Duree Colour Inspiration

I absolutely adore this pastel colour palette which was put together by celebrity wedding planner Siobhan Craven-Robins for a wedding which I was involved in late last year.

The pretty wedding stationery was produced here at Magenta Ink! for this romantic wedding included personalised table menu cards with silver engraving on pistachio mint 365gsm card which were then embellished with a small initial monogram engraved and die stamped at the top of the card and then personalised with the guests names in silver calligraphy. Then tucked into a little pocket napkin sat on a charger plate for ultimate table elegance. The individual table names depicted famous events which run throughout the year in London such as Wimbledon and The Chelsea Flower Show.

The inspiration for the wedding colour palette was dreamed up by Siobhan and came from the spectacular La Durée tea rooms in Paris which date back to 1862 when Louis Ernest La Durée, a miller from France’s southwest, created a bakery at 16 rue Royale in Paris. Shops can now be found all over the world and they are very unique and distinct with their pretty pastel colour schemes of pistachio mint green, candy pink, clotted creams and lemon, ornate rich Baroque gold frames and beautiful parma violets and soft lavender shades.

Siobhan Craven-Robins has pulled these elements together with the expertise and unique style which is her signature trade mark to all the wedding she co-ordinates.

The table favours were of course beautiful boxed treats from La Durée in their trademark pistachio packaging tied with parma violet ribbon and the flowers did look so complimentary in shades of soft candy pink, lavender and cream shades in modern silver pots by established South East & London celebrity florist Mary Jane Vaughan who produces adorable work which are always traditionally pretty but with a contemporary twist. Sparkling glasses and large ivory pillar candles set on gorgeous candle sticks which create ultimate table elegance.

It's so sweet and looks just good enough to eat!

These are the words of Karen Finlayson of Renideo and I can confirm that she certainly makes you feel good and positive after having a colour consultation with her yesterday. As I designer I have worked with colour all my life from the early days of school just enjoying my coloured pens and paints. So I thought I knew quite a bit about colour already as I select colour and print combinations with clients every day. Well, its a complete eye opener to relate colour to yourself. I tend to shy away from most colours for personal use being a great fan of YES BLACK and BEIGE although I did discover that lots of tones of rust, mushroom, gold and ivories were very good for my complexion.

I learned so much yesterday and enjoyed the experience immensely (I over run my time and by the time I reached my car, Yes Karen I had a lovely parking ticket, yikes, but hey what the hell!! I loved my time over-run)

I would certainly recommend the consultation to others who like me are confident about colour and their personal style but would like some direction in key areas of their style and colour as like it or not as we get older our skin tone changes and that bright pink might not be quite so hot as it used to be. We can all get in a bit of a rut with our own style and colour choices when we are busy concentrating on other aspects of our lives.

Thank you so much Karen. I have my "colours" in my bag for the next time I go shopping. NO MORE BLACK clothes!!!! Well maybe the odd lbd...

Chic Contemporay Wedding Palette

I hope to bring some lovely "real life" wedding colour palette's to life in my blogs this year. As January is usually cold, chilly & icy outside then what better way than to start the year with a chic cool wedding colour scheme. Suzanne and Declan Curry were married in November 2010 and the colour scheme is perfectly fitting for this feature. A beautiful wedding which was co-ordinated by top London wedding planner Lester Gethings of No 10 Weddings.

Cool contemporary shades of Stone, Silver and Steel Greys were used. Mixed with a strong Cobalt Blue & hightened with light Ivory & Quartz shades in the form of magnificent floral displays and bouquets by Euphoric Flowers. A hint of dark Aubergine & Pillar Box Red was picked out in the miniature tailor made cake display by Peggy Porchen.

It was a delightful wedding to work on from the initial invitation brief which were thermography printed in Cobalt Blue & Silver Ink on Winter White Quartz Board and supplied with lined envelopes in Cobalt Blue paper for a hint of luxury.

The brief for the stationery was quite specific and defined by Top London Wedding Planner Lester Gethings of No 10 Weddings, which always makes the job so much easier and a pleasure to work on.

The Haymarket Hotel is a striking venue set in London which has a traditional exterior which lends itself beautifully to the line drawing which I produced for the invitations which were also used on the Order of The Day Cards. The escort cards were produced by hand in a traditional hand calligraphy style in Cobalt Blue ink as were the Menu Cards which had a small Silver Initial Monogram printed at the top with the guests names personalised. Popped in a pocket napkin and dressed with a miniature corsage by Euphoric Flowers set on Cobalt Blue charger plates.

Stunning photography by Lloyd Dobbie captured the day on film & delicious detailing such as the lovely furniture from The Great Hire Company and special little touches of elegance with antique tea light settings & silver grey silk linen & glassware. So much attention to detail.

The Bride, Suzanne looked splendid in her ivory Wedding Dress by Wedding Dress Designer Johanna Hehir finished off with a splendid diamond necklace by Diamond Thrills. Her make up was done by make up artist Oonagh Connor and hair by Martin Maxey. What else can a girl ask for?

The guests were entertained by music performed in the library by Jon Nicols at Gary Gary Parkes and then in the evening live swing music by The Jazz Cannons

Getting Personal - A Bit About Me...

I've always been a bit worried about getting too personal with my blogs. Its hard to draw the line between "business blog" and your personal life and feelings. But it seems to me that your personal life really overlaps your business life in so many ways. It becomes hard not to share your personal feelings, moments, ideas, friendships, family issues with your business ones, it becomes the tapestry of your life.

Selecting what is relevant from the trivia of every day life which touches us all is not always easy. As the business head always goes with the business ethic. It is always wise to consider what you bring into your "business blogs". It has to enhance the business and reflect the personality of the owner.

Without a doubt it certainly gives more depth to a blog if it reveals a bit more of "your true self". For instance take the highly successful blog by Julie Powell which was made into a book and blog "Julie and Julia". I loved it! My goodness, she really did manage to combine both of her wonderful skills and personality into that blog. It took blogging and cooking into a different stratosphere and dimension. She was a lucky girl because she not only loved cooking but was also a very skilled writer. We are not all so fortunate to have two great skills at our fingertips.

I love the blogs that I read which give a hint of the person behind them. "The Person and Drive" behind the business. It makes it just that bit more personal and it makes you smile, agree, laugh and be somewhat cynical at times. Sometimes though, too many of us are just that little bit scared or even slightly embarrassed to show too much of our personal lives/ideas/feelings in case other people don't like what they see or read. Well, that's always going to happen. Isn't it?

My life which is perfectly normal, sometimes verging on boring! because life is not always exciting as it is in film and novels. It revolves around my family, my friendships, my "business" contacts who have also become my dear friends as it so happens. Family, People and Business Relationships that's what matters most in life.

I am a mother of two teenage boys. Lovely but normal, difficult but frustrating, the usual sort of thing. When others are blogging about pregnancies and babies, I just think yes that's so exciting I knew that stage once many moon's ago. It's so wonderful, enjoy, treasure and learn. That's what life is for, personally and professionally. Enjoy the journey. It goes so fast.

Just last weekend I was at a friends surprise 40th Birthday Party. Now, you know a bit more about how old I am (roughly speaking!) if you had not guessed already by my picture! and quite unexpectedly I met up with a lady whom I had worked with in one of my early design jobs. I was thrilled to hear how well her boys were now they were grown men and all doing things they were destined to do. My old colleague said to me Adrienne "You are the glue that keep's it all together" Well as a stationer I am familiar with glue. PVA, double sided tape, spray mount, quite frankly anything that sticks. Sticking at it, to it , with it. That's the thing that keeps it all together. Through the good, bad and frankly indifferent periods of life.

So while I wait on my husband to come home for dinner hopefully soon as the steak pie will be burnt and teenage son no. 1 to roll in from the cinema and as I try to get the rugby kit dry for morning while feeding the dogs, yes I had a weak moment prior to Christmas and we now have a new puppy "Matilda" aka "Tilly" who is eating all the pants, socks and boxers she can get her claws on.
Both adorable I have to say.

I would like to wish all my friends, family, business contacts, blogger's, tweeter's, facebooker's all the best for an eventful 2011. Be yourself. Enjoy what you do and just go for it. Be the glue that sticks with it. Adhere to your goals and aspirations, Believe in yourself.

That's the best we can do.

Hopetoun House Special Wedding Event by Appointment Only

Hopetoun House is hosting a very special day for prospective bridal couples for private individual tours of the house on Sunday 30th January 2011 (by appointment only).

This is a rare opportunity to have a personal tour of the house and the opportunity to see the venue set up for a wedding before meeting with some of Hopetoun House's most regular suppliers. The first appointment will start at 10 am and with the last appointment at 3.00 pm.

During that time frame five experienced Hopetoun House event managers will be on hand answering questions and conducting show rounds on the day.

Guests will initially be welcomed with a glass of champagne into the front hall of the house, where they will be introduced to their event manager and start their tour of the State Apartments & Libraries. If they are considering holding their ceremony with Hopetoun House then the event manager will show the couple the Adam Stables which will be set up in this style. The tour will then finish in the ballroom wing where a selection of sample tables set up and suppliers exhibiting. The Tapestry Room will be available for guests to sit down and look through information/brochures etc at their leisure.

As spaces are limited it would be advisable if you are interested to book your appointment as quickly as possible to avoid disappointment.

I had a great time this morning despite fretting about all the jobs I have to complete at the moment. Taking a lovely summer craft class for young kids of primary school age at Southfield Stationers. A great crafting place for young and old alike... The kids were so lovely and full of ideas, it never ceases to amaze me. I had a fab time too and I now feel my creative batteries have been r-charged and refreshed. I am pleased to have taken a few hours out of my busy day to put a few hours back into the community arts at such a fab scrapbooking, crafting, paper haven.

If you are in the Eskbank/Mid Lothian area you must check out Southfields and their great classes. Everything from calligraphy to scrap booking, card making and so much more!!!

These are a few of the examples my fantasy mask examples which I made as examples for the class. I am actually thinking that there could be a wedding invitation idea lurking in here somewhere.

Talking about post, I thought this new blog post was a good one to follow on from the Royal Mail "Smilers" one . What an absolute genius idea these Wedding Post Boxes are, they are an amazing idea from yourweddingpostbox and very beautifully made here in the UK!!

A lovely bride of ours had ordered one of these lovely custom post boxes for her wedding guests to post some mini correspondence cards which were designed and produced for her at Magenta Ink! The little cards which were given to her guests to write their sentiments on the cards were headed with the small headline "pearls of wisdom".

These postboxes are also great for guests to post their wedding cards and sentiments on arrival to the reception.

Ten Top Ways to Green Your Wedding!

The word green is closely related to the Old English verb growan, “to grow”. It is used to describe plants or the ocean.

A green wedding can still be chic and classy, it just need some extra thought applied when planning the small details which can actually make a big difference to the environment.
Summer is a great time for a green wedding because of the unusual outdoor locations which are now on offer for weddings and civil ceremonies.

1. Location! Location! Location! Think Carbon Footprint and book a venue local to you and the majority of your guests. Then have your ceremony and reception at the same location to save transportation between venues.

2. Choose a pretty outdoor location which would be especially fantastic if it's a summer wedding. Set the tone with a "Green Venue" and the rest will flow and fall into place, a golf course is very green, a marquee on an organic farm, historic castle, think national trust, a botanical garden or seaside/ beach/riverside location would also be lovely. It will set the tone and infuse the event without huge decoration cost. Look at the green benefits which are natural ones with these particular venues. Get the venue involved in greening the event and I'm sure they will enter into the green spirit of your day and be able to contribute with great green ideas...

3. Home grown market garden flowers! that are produced locally is a very green way to green your wedding. In Britain there are some lovely flower producers on our doorstep. A bit research is all that is required on the internet to find the local flower producer in your area. Try Sarah Raven as a starting point! http://www.sarahraven.com I have always admired her flower growing skills and wonderful flower knowledge of bulbs and seeds which are available, ever since I saw her doing a beautiful flower presentation in her sister's house in Edinburgh a few years ago. This would be a perfect flower bulb producer to advise you of local suppliers/ producers of British country garden flowers in your area.

4. If you have the opportunity, why not use local suppliers for your Wedding Breakfast. "Organic Produce" is delicious! Or certainly ask your caterer/venue if that is indeed a possibility. If you don't ask and find out the options you won't know where the food is coming from and therefore you are losing out on having your green say. It won't be the first celebrity who has dished up organic produce and simple food delights to their wedding guests. Kate Winslett served "bangers and mash" at her first wedding. Find out who grows what locally and discuss your dietary requirements carefully with your caterer. After all it's your wedding.

5. Vintage is so fabulously "in fashion" at the moment so take full advantage of being so chic by having a vintage wedding gown, rings or even using pieces of gold which have been in the family, ask aunts, uncles and grandparents to contribute a small piece of plain gold jewellery as a token of their love to you. I'm sure they would love the fact that their old gold pieces could be melted and made into wedding bands for your special day. Use vegetable dye to dye the bridesmaid shoes.

Celebrity wedding's are no exception and I suppose they are the icing on the cake! as far as designing wedding stationery that is!! A celebrity client brings a buzz to the studio...

We all seem to have a fascination for "celebrity" in the UK and don't we all love the Ok! and Hello magazine especially when they feature the latest celebrity wedding. A celebrity client brings that little extra "pazzazz"and excitement to the job but in essence it also brings responsibility to respect their privacy as you would do any other bride or groom or client. I have never rushed to market this side of my business because of that factor as I feel personally that discretion is part of the job.

I took part in designing and supplying the stationery for the wedding of the incredibly talented & eternally beautiful Joan Collins and dashing Percy Gibson in 2002. At the time I was asked by celebrity wedding co-ordinator Siobhan Craven-Robins to produce stationery for Joan & Percy in their chosen colour scheme of lilacs, deep purple and silver. The result was stunning and it the whole wedding was featured in the fabulous Hello magazine.

White engraving is just pure class. Engraving is such a skilled craft there is no doubting the beautiful effect it has on its finished piece of work. Our burnt orange invitation from the fabulous William Arthur Collection which we hold in the magenta ink studio was featured in this month's best of Scottish Wedding Directory Magazine and is such a great colour for spring and summer. Many thanks to the extremely talented Sarah Robertson and her wonderful team at "CREATIVE STATE" for their valued web and design expertise over the past six months in creating and designing the new improved Magenta Ink! web site which went "live" this weekend. They are an incredible team of dedicated designers with exceptional talent and skills in the technical world that we live in. Sarah listened patiently about motifs, monograms, ink colours, envelope liners, font choices, print techniques and although a designer herself, stationery jargon can take on a whole new league of it's own.

I just wanted the whole ordering process to be as simple and headache free as possible because it can just be a complete mind field if there is too much choice. It won't be the first time that I have heard a client say I didn't realise there was so much to it and there was so much choice. So hopefully the new Magenta Ink! site will guide customers through the selection process of ordering customised stationery with as much ease as humanly possible. Sorry guys, but you just have to bite the bullet and some point to make that decision on script or sans serif font, mushroom ink or charcoal ink. Motif or Monogram, Thermography Print or Letterpress Printing! Sarah and I discussed the whole process so many times I'm sure she was dreaming the process, that's how dedicated they are to their clients.

Although Magenta Ink has been established for six years now and CREATIVE STATE designed the first web site, which was dearly loved I may add, a business can be very much like a child going through the different stages and development of its life. Developing a brand over a period of time is not always an easy task, especially these days with the world wide web and so many other great web sites vying for attention. It's good to move with the times developing your brand at the ages and stages that things need re-addressed and refreshed. Social media is moving at the rate of noughts and its sometimes hard to keep up! But there are business's out there that I indeed would not have heard about and made connection with otherwise. I have always been fortunate to travel far and wide with my business meeting new designers and sharing in their experiences which has been an absolute delight and has truly enhanced my knowledge and experience in the stationery business. I have also shared my expertise as sharing back is part of the experience. The key to life is sharing, not taking or stealing clients as that is a hurtful experience and in the long run its very short sighted. It is important to be your own brand and have your own unique personality so hopefully with Magenta Ink! and her new grown up make over she is truly developing into her stride and style.

I love the fact that our image has remained clean, fresh and modern. Thank you CREATIVE STATE I enjoy things which are editorial in feel coming from a background in advertising and communication myself before entering the social stationery business. I look forward to any feedback and hope you will enjoy the new site, future designers which will come online month by month and the development of our new monograms and products online! which is a lovely buy and go concept that Brides and Grooms can get to grips with.

The "it" colour for early spring is without doubt "Robin's Egg Blue" not quite blue but not quite aqua either could be the best way of describing this cool colour. Tiffany Blue would spring to mind also. Ah yes!! I can hear all the girls saying. We know and love that little blue box with the subtle black branding on it and the black ribbon packaging with the exquisite diamonds inside! If only... Pistaschio, mint and apple green are always so fresh and complimentary to other colour palettes. They are muted and pleasing on the eye. They look great with pretty pinks as well as lavender and lemon.

At the end of last year I was approached to produce a logo for an exiting new small business "Yummy Mummy Coaching". A service aimed at helping women get back to work after a career break related to health problems, raising a family, caring for a relative etc. Whatever the reason it may be this service is invaluable to women of all ages in fact who would like to address their potential skill sets in life going forward and address confidence issues or to work out what skill sets they have or would need to have to return to work on a full or part time basis.

It is a starting point to get yourself back on track to do something positive for yourself! Writing that book, re-training in an area of work that you have always dreamed of or just brushing up on the skill sets which you already have or don't know you have. Its just knowing where to start and building confidence to take those initial steps.

With clear directions from Yummy Mummy's Director Christine Campbell I was able to create a logo which retained a very feminine appeal but also incorporating Christine's love for handbags and the vintage pink and chocolate colour scheme which she adores. The handbag was inspired by Anya Hymndmarch's "Rock" style bag, as in my opinion it is well designed, practical bag and on top of all of that it is dependable and stylish too. The hand drawn bag was worked into the lettering style to symbolise as a swinging bag on a ladies arm.

The client was delighted with the final logo design and implementation. I would like to wish Yummy Mummy Coach and Christine all the best for 2010!

Amanda Clarno the director of Allee and Press is a very talented designer who designs and prints each piece of stationery from scratch. The winter edition 2009/10 of "The Best Scottish Weddings" has now hit the magazine stands in bookshops and newsagents.

We all just love a wedding magazine and this winter edition is very romantic indeed. In this months copy they have a lovely stationery feature titled "Let it Snow" with snowflakes and sparkle to set the tone for winter nuptials.

Our Christmas Dog

My boys love sending out photo cards to their friends at Christmas and our border collie "Robbie" is always the star on the card. I just thought I would share the pictures taken this year, as they do make you smile and give you the feel good factor for the day. He sat so patiently like a real Hollywood Dog Star. He should really be in the movies, he is so obedient, he sat patiently for 15 minutes getting these shots taken, although he did get little biccie treats for doing so!!

Black and White Chic Stationery

We were very happy at Magenta Ink! to be involved in the wedding of Deborah McNab and Colin Kirk which took place early Autumn on the 12th September 2009 at Airth Castle Hotel & Spa Resort in Central Scotland near Stirling and Edinburgh. The Historic Airth Castle majestically overlooks the River Forth and has been around since the 14th Century, therefore compeletly steeped in romance and history. What a beautiful setting for such a lovely wedding.

Deborah and Colin were a pleasure to work with from the start, Deborah being an architect had very firm ideas on the look and construction! of her wedding stationery. The crisp black and white stationery was inspired by her love of "Jo Malone Candles" and the table names were even named after her favourite "Jo Malone Fragrances" such as Wild Fig and White Jasmine. What a nice idea!

Newly weds Angela and Sandy Kerr were very kind to share some recent wedding photographs with Magenta Ink! of their Summer Italian Wedding at the very beautiful location of Villa Catignano in Tuscany close to Siena, in the Chianti countryside. Lets face it, favours don't have to cost a fortune. Its fun to be creative with ideas which are playful and resourceful. It's fun after all. As the word states, it's a little "favour" for guests young and old attending your wedding or event. Something pretty, attractive and eyecatching always takes a trick. Especially if sweets are involved. These are a few ideas from Magenta Ink!

The Lottery Ticket:
By no means a new idea but my goodness what a good one it is. Someone could end up a millionaire with this little £1.00 purchase. Present them in nice coloured envelopes in keeping with your colourscheme or house them in something more unusal like this little cardboard purse style. These were crafted at the MI! So we could help you on that!

Little cones made out of fancy wrap is a lovely idea as you can fill them with sweet or savoury treats like marshmallows or popcorn. Or how about the good old fashioned fortune teller origami, fill them with brightly coloured jelly beans, delicious.

My husband has just brought me back this gorgeous new Prada Perfume from Milan, just to keep me sweet and make up for me not being able to join him their last weekend when he was travelling on business. I have been so hectic with summer wedding stationery orders in the studio I've hardly had time to lift my head never mind fly out to Milan. Pity...

I've been to Milan a few times though and appreciate the fine architecture and the sense of fashion that the city is full of in abundance.

The graphics for Prada's new Infusion de fleur d'Oranger are quite stunning too. Rich with strong colour, tinged with a strong arts and crafts influence with a modern edge. I had a lovely visit down at The Vineyard from Emma aka 27 Wedding Stationery on Thursday, we enjoyed tea and scones and a lovely catch up. She popped into update her gorgeous line of wedding stationery and is looking quite the yummy mummy after the birth of her now eight month little son Fraser. Combining motherhood and running her own line of wedding stationery is obviously working well for Emma, she has been choc-a-blok with orders and has recently had her work featured on Bridal Soup. www.bridalsoup.com/.....

I just love her concertina design with the subtle double satin ribbon, sheer touch of luxury, the hardest thing is choosing a colour. My favourite design is her best selling little fluttery butterfly.

Sometimes its just lack of ideas in what we could do with the food to create a second meal or snack with. I've just spotted this cookbook that could just help me with my current food waste dilema. On trend with the current make-do-and mend mentality, food journalist Kate Colquhoun takes fit-for-the-bin food and turns it into a feast. Not only healthy, but giving a healthy vitamin injection to the bank balance also. Packed with hints and tips and a no-nonsense approach on vital storage information and using your freezer to the max, she's certainly giving Nigella a run for her money.

Now it's nearly summer and the garden looks so lovely but the boys and the dog are trailing back and forward with dirt on their feet I am on the prowl for some new funky doormats, found these gorgeous ones on the bombay duck site. Exhausted after a busy, successful day at The Attention to Detail Wedding Event I am patiently waiting for the official photographs which Alan Rankine took of the day www.rankinephotography.com

The room looked absolutely gorgeous and the experts were buzzing with enthusiasm and hopefully the brides took away some valued information as well as enjoying a leisurely afternoon mixing with the experts.

with her meticulous planning introduced the afternoon with a very nice opening speech, followed by Lynne McNicoll from TCT www.lynnesnewchallenge.co.uk, who gave a moving speech about the teenagers in Scotland who have been diagnosed with cancer and whom we are all trying very hard to raise funds for.

The two themed tables by Monica Higgins:
www.flowersbymonicahiggins.co.uk were absolutely gorgeous with a fresh garden inspired table with vintage pale lemon china filled with forget-me-notes and a gorgeous silver cake stand laden with freshly cut garden flowers and although I say it myself the Magenta Ink china themed menus complimented the table setting picking out the cornflower blue colour scheme and bright pink buds. The Parisian full bloom table with dusky pink roses and apple blossom was laden with peachy pink and blush colour schemes and gorgeous greenery.
